Description
1,3-Butanediol (CAS 107-88-0) is a diol alcohol also known as butylene glycol or butane-1,3-diol, supplied as a colourless liquid under EC number 203-529-7. It carries no E-code designation and is not classified as a food additive. It is distinct from 1,4-butanediol and 1,2-butanediol in both reactivity and application profile.
In personal care formulations, it functions as a humectant by drawing moisture into the stratum corneum and as a solvent to improve active ingredient delivery. In polyurethane and polyester production, it acts as a short-chain diol crosslinker, reacting with isocyanates or diacids to control polymer chain extension and final material hardness. Automotive heat stabiliser systems also incorporate it to protect polymer components under thermal stress.
This product is available in cosmetic and technical grades, both compliant with REACH registration requirements. It is handled under HS code 29053920 and supplied in standard IBC and drum formats. Procurement teams should confirm grade specification against Ph.Eur. or cosmetic-grade certificates of analysis where applicable.
