Description

1,4-Butanediol (CAS 110-63-4), commonly abbreviated as 1,4-BD, is a short-chain diol belonging to the alcohols and glycols family. It is also referred to as 1,4-butylene glycol or 1,4-dihydroxybutane. No E-code applies to this substance.

In polyurethane and polyester production, 1,4-BD functions as a chain extender and crosslinker, reacting with isocyanates or diacids to build polymer backbone structure and control mechanical properties. In food and fragrance applications, it serves as a solvent carrier for flavourants and fragrance compounds, improving dispersion and stability within formulations.

1,4-Butanediol is supplied in technical and high-purity grades, with select batches meeting FCC or Ph.Eur. specifications for food and pharmaceutical use. The substance is registered under REACH (EC 203-786-5) and classified under HS code 29053980. It is typically available in drums and IBC containers.
