Description

1,6-Hexanediol (CAS 629-11-8), also known as 1,6-HDO, hexanediol, or α,ω-Hexanediol, is a linear aliphatic diol with hydroxyl groups at both chain ends. It carries no E-code designation and is not classified as a food additive. Its bifunctional structure makes it reactive at both terminals, distinguishing it from mono-functional glycols.

In polyurethane and polyester coatings, 1,6-HDO acts as a chain extender and crosslinker, reacting with isocyanates or acids to build molecular weight and control film hardness. In personal care formulations, it functions as an emulsion stabilizer and hair-conditioning agent by bridging polar and non-polar phases at low concentrations.

1,6-Hexanediol is supplied in white waxy flake form and is available in REACH-compliant grades for the European market. It is handled under HS code 29053980. Procurement quantities typically range from 25 kg bags to bulk pallet formats depending on supplier specification.
