Description
1-Amino-2-propanol (CAS 78-96-6), commonly known as MIPA or Monoisopropanolamine, is an alkanolamine with the molecular formula C3H9NO. It is also referred to as Threamine and Aminopropanol in trade and technical contexts. No E-code designation applies to this substance.
In coatings and adhesives, MIPA acts as a crosslinker by reacting with epoxy or isocyanate groups to build polymer network density and improve film hardness. In personal care formulations, it functions as a pH buffer and skin conditioner, neutralising acidic ingredients to stabilise emulsions. It also demonstrates antimicrobial activity relevant to preservation systems in cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.
MIPA is supplied as a technical-grade liquid and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Procurement should confirm supplier SDS documentation and purity specifications appropriate to the target application, whether cosmetic, pharmaceutical, or industrial. Standard packaging formats include drums and IBC containers.
