Description
1-Butanol (CAS 71-36-3), also known as n-Butanol, Butanol-1, or Butanolen, is a four-carbon primary alcohol with no assigned E-code. It is commercially produced via oxo synthesis or the Reppe process and is available from European chemical distributors under standard industrial and specialty grades.
In plastics and polymer manufacturing, 1-Butanol reacts with isocyanates or melamine resins to function as a crosslinker, extending polymer chain networks and improving coating durability. In food and fragrance applications, it acts as a solvent carrier for flavor compounds and as a flavorant precursor, where its ester derivatives deliver characteristic fruity notes.
1-Butanol is supplied in FCC and technical grades, with Ph.Eur. grade available for pharmaceutical applications. It falls under REACH regulation (EC 200-751-6) and is classified accordingly under HS code 29051300. Standard packaging includes IBC containers and bulk tanker deliveries for industrial procurement volumes.
