Description
1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide, commonly known as EDAC, EDCI, or water-soluble carbodiimide, is a carbodiimide-class coupling reagent with CAS 1892-57-5. It is also abbreviated as WSCD or WSCI in technical literature. Unlike many carbodiimides, it is active in aqueous environments without organic co-solvents.
In pharmaceutical and bioconjugation workflows, EDAC activates carboxyl groups to form reactive O-acylisourea intermediates, enabling amide bond formation between proteins, peptides, or small molecules under mild conditions. In food and nutrition applications, it functions as a processing aid supporting flavoring systems and preservation chemistry, where its reactivity toward amine and carboxyl groups is exploited at controlled pH.
EDAC is supplied as a liquid and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU procurement. Buyers should confirm grade suitability against FCC or Ph.Eur. specifications depending on application. Standard packaging formats vary by supplier; documentation including SDS and CoA is available upon request.
