1-Naphthol

1-Naphthol (CAS 90-15-3) is an aromatic alcohol derived from naphthalene, commercially known under the names alpha-Naphthol, C.I. 76605, and 1-Naphthalenol. It carries no assigned E-code and is registered under EC number 201-969-4. It is supplied as pale grey to brown crystalline flakes with the molecular formula C10H8O.

In textile and leather dyeing, 1-Naphthol acts as a coupling component in azo dye synthesis, reacting with diazonium salts directly on the fibre to fix colour. In personal care formulations, particularly oxidative hair dyes, it functions as a primary colour intermediate. Its phenolic structure also confers antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, making it applicable as a stabiliser in rubber and polymer processing.

1-Naphthol is available in technical and refined grades and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Procurement quantities are typically offered in fibre drums or multi-layer bags.
