Description
2,2'-Azobis(2-methylpropionitrile), commonly known as AIBN or azobisisobutyronitrile and sold under trade names such as Aceto AZIB, is a free-radical initiator with CAS number 78-67-1 and EC number 201-132-3. It carries no E-code designation and is classified under HS code 29269090.
In plastics and polymer manufacturing, AIBN decomposes thermally at 60–80°C to release nitrogen gas and generate two isobutyronitrile radicals, initiating chain-growth polymerisation of vinyl and acrylic monomers. It also functions as a blowing agent in expanded polymer systems, where the released nitrogen creates a controlled cellular structure, and finds application as a biocide in certain coating and sealant formulations.
AIBN is supplied as a white crystalline solid and is available in standard technical grade. The substance is registered under REACH and subject to handling restrictions due to its flammable and self-reactive classification. Buyers should confirm current SDS documentation and packaging configurations directly with our supply team.
