2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene

CAS 118-96-7
Aerospace & Defense

Description

2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene, commonly known as TNT, Trotyl, or Tolite, is a pale yellow crystalline organic compound with CAS number 118-96-7. It is one of the most chemically stable high explosives, remaining inert without a detonator, which distinguishes it from primary explosives.

TNT serves as a reference standard in explosive yield measurement, where the "TNT equivalent" quantifies the energy released by other explosives or blasts. In defense and demolition applications, it is pressed or cast into munitions, warheads, and shaped charges, where detonation converts solid mass into rapidly expanding gas within microseconds.

Supply is strictly governed by EU explosives precursor regulations and national defense procurement frameworks, with distribution limited to licensed end-users holding appropriate permits. Grades are defined by military specifications rather than pharmacopeial standards. Packaging and transport comply with ADR Class 1 explosive classifications.
