Description
2-Butoxyethanol (CAS 111-76-2) is a glycol ether solvent commercially available under trade names including Dowanol EB, Butyl Oxitol, Gafcol EB, and Egmbe. It carries no E-code designation and is registered under EC number 203-905-0. The molecular formula is C6H14O2.
In waterborne coatings and industrial cleaners, 2-butoxyethanol acts as a coalescing agent and coupling solvent, reducing surface tension to improve film formation and emulsify oils for removal. In printing inks, it controls viscosity and slows evaporation rate to prevent screen blocking. It also functions as a reactive diluent in cross-linking systems for adhesives and sealants.
2-Butoxyethanol is supplied as a technical-grade liquid and is fully registered under REACH (SVHC screening applies). Procurement teams should note classification under CLP Regulation as a harmful substance requiring appropriate SDS review. Standard packaging includes IBC containers and bulk tanker delivery for industrial volumes.
