Description
2-Ethylhexyl Thioglycolate (CAS 7659-86-1) is a sulfur-containing ester supplied under trade names including Evabopol 196D and abbreviated as 2-EHTG. It carries no E-code designation and is also referenced as octyl thioglycolate or 2-ethylhexyl mercaptoacetate in technical and procurement documentation.
In PVC stabilisation, 2-EHTG functions as a co-stabiliser by scavenging labile chloride ions and reacting with degradation intermediates to interrupt thermal breakdown chains. In lubricant and metalworking formulations, its thiol group provides reactive bonding to metal surfaces, delivering boundary lubrication under high-load conditions. It also serves as a chain-transfer agent in controlled radical polymerisation to regulate molecular weight distribution.
2-EHTG is subject to REACH registration requirements within the European Economic Area and should be handled in accordance with applicable CLP classification obligations. It is available as a liquid oil-phase product, typically supplied in drums or intermediate bulk containers. Buyers should confirm grade specifications and purity certificates directly with the supplier.
