2-Hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone (CAS 7473-98-5) is a liquid alpha-hydroxy ketone photoinitiator commercially known as Photoinitiator 1173, also referenced as Benzoyl Isopropanol or alpha-Hydroxyisobutyrophenone. In UV-curable coatings and printing inks, it absorbs radiation in the 300-400 nm range and undergoes alpha-cleavage to generate reactive benzoyl and methyl radicals that initiate free-radical polymerization. It also functions as a fragrance and flavorant ingredient in personal care and food applications, and provides UV stabilization in polymer formulations exposed to light degradation.
