Description

3-O-Ethyl-L-ascorbic acid (CAS 86404-04-8) is a stabilised ether derivative of vitamin C, also referred to as Ethyl VC, Ethyl Ascorbic, or VC Ethyl Ether. Unlike ascorbic acid, the ethyl group at the 3-position protects the molecule from oxidative degradation, significantly extending shelf stability in formulated products. No E-code is assigned.

In personal care formulations, 3-O-Ethyl-L-ascorbic acid functions as both an antioxidant and a skin-conditioning agent. It inhibits melanin synthesis by blocking tyrosinase activity, making it a functional ingredient in brightening and anti-ageing topicals. Its enhanced lipophilicity relative to ascorbic acid improves dermal penetration through the stratum corneum.

This ingredient is supplied as a solid and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU market entry. Procurement teams should confirm supplier documentation includes a full REACH-compliant safety data sheet and certificate of analysis. HS code 2936.27.0000 applies for customs classification within the EU.
