Abietic acid

Abietic acid (CAS 514-10-3) is a naturally derived organic acid extracted from pine rosin, also known commercially as rosin acid or sylvic acid. It belongs to the abietane family of resin acids and carries no assigned E-code, as it functions primarily as an industrial and cosmetic raw material rather than a food additive.

In adhesive and sealant formulations, abietic acid acts as a tackifying agent by anchoring polymer chains to substrates through its carboxylic acid group, improving bond strength and flexibility. In personal care emulsions, it stabilises oil-water interfaces and conditions skin by forming a cohesive film. Printing ink manufacturers use it as a resin precursor to control viscosity and pigment dispersion.

Abietic acid is supplied in crystalline and chunk form and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU market entry. Procurement teams should confirm supplier SDS documentation and purity grade specifications, particularly for cosmetic applications where compliance with EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 is required.
