Description
Acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM, CAS 21282-97-3) is a bifunctional monomer combining a methacrylate polymerizable group with a reactive acetoacetate moiety. It is commercially available under trade names including Eastman AAEM and Lonzamon AAEMA, and carries no assigned E-code. The molecular formula is C10H14O5.
In waterborne coatings and adhesives, AAEM functions as a crosslinking comonomer: the acetoacetate group reacts with amines or aldehydes post-film formation, building network density without external crosslinker addition. In emulsion polymerization, it is incorporated into the polymer backbone to enable ambient-cure crosslinking, improving hardness and chemical resistance in architectural and industrial coatings.
AAEM is supplied as a clear liquid and is registered under REACH. Procurement should confirm inhibitor levels and storage conditions, as the monomer requires temperature-controlled handling. Standard packaging includes drums and IBCs. Buyers should request a current SDS and certificate of analysis confirming purity and inhibitor specification.
