Description
Acrylic acid (CAS 79-10-7) is an organic acid also known as propenoic acid or acroleic acid, with the molecular formula C3H4O2. It carries no E-code designation and is not classified as a food additive under EU frameworks. It is the simplest unsaturated carboxylic acid and serves as a foundational building block in industrial chemistry.
In plastics and polymer manufacturing, acrylic acid undergoes free-radical polymerization to produce polyacrylic acid and superabsorbent polymers used in hygiene products and coatings. In personal care formulations, it functions as a pH buffer and crosslinking monomer in carbomer-based gels. At low concentrations it also acts as an antimicrobial agent in preservation systems.
Acrylic acid is supplied under REACH registration and is available in technical and high-purity grades. Standard packaging includes IBC containers and bulk tankers. Buyers should confirm inhibitor content, typically hydroquinone monomethyl ether, as this affects polymerization behavior and storage compatibility.
