Acrylic acid-maleic anhydride copolymer (CAS 26677-99-6, EC 616-772-2) is a synthetic anionic polymer formed by the copolymerisation of acrylic acid and maleic anhydride monomers. It is also referenced under the names EMH 138 and NSC 124031. No E-code designation applies to this substance.

In water treatment, the polymer inhibits scale formation by binding calcium and magnesium ions through chelation, preventing crystal growth on metal surfaces. In textile and paper processing, it functions as a dispersant and rheology modifier, controlling viscosity and improving pigment or filler distribution across substrates. It also serves as a corrosion inhibitor in metalworking fluids and cooling water systems.
