Description

(+/-)-Alpha-Lipoic Acid (CAS 1077-28-7), also known as thioctic acid or liponic acid and abbreviated ALA, is a naturally occurring organosulfur compound produced as a racemic mixture of its R and S enantiomers. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified under HS code 29349900.

In pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulations, ALA functions as a redox-active antioxidant by cycling between oxidised and reduced states, regenerating co-antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. In food processing, it acts as a preservative and heat stabiliser by chelating pro-oxidant metal ions, slowing lipid oxidation during thermal treatment.

ALA is supplied as a light-yellow crystalline powder in pharmaceutical-grade (Ph.Eur.) and food-grade (FCC) specifications, with REACH compliance documentation available. Standard packaging includes 25 kg fibre drums, with smaller quantities available on request.
