Description
Ammonium ferric citrate (E 381, ferric ammonium citrate, iron(III) ammonium citrate) is an iron salt of citric acid in which ferric iron is coordinated with citrate and ammonium ions. It is registered under CAS 1185-57-5 and EC 214-686-6, and appears in both reddish-brown and green forms depending on iron content.
In food and pharmaceutical manufacturing, it serves as an iron fortification agent and bioavailable iron source in dietary supplements, where the citrate ligand enhances gastrointestinal absorption compared to inorganic iron salts. In water treatment, it functions as a coagulation aid and photosensitizer, and in agriculture it delivers chelated iron to correct soil deficiencies in iron-sensitive crops.
Ammonium ferric citrate is available in food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade forms, with compliance to E 381 (EU food additive), FCC, and Ph.Eur. monographs. It falls under REACH registration obligations for EU supply. Standard packaging includes fiber drums and multi-layer bags; specific formats are confirmed at inquiry.
