Description

Ammonium propionate (CAS 17496-08-1) is the ammonium salt of propionic acid, commercially known under trade names such as Luprosil NC. It carries no assigned E-number in the EU but is recognised as ammonium propanoate in regulatory and technical documentation. It is distinct from sodium and calcium propionate salts used in food applications.

In animal feed and silage preservation, ammonium propionate inhibits mould and yeast growth by releasing propionic acid, which disrupts microbial cell membranes at low pH. It also serves as a nitrogen source for ruminants, combining antimicrobial action with nutritional function. In grain storage, it controls fungal spoilage during high-moisture conditions.

Ammonium propionate is supplied in liquid form for feed and agricultural applications and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU supply. Buyers should confirm feed-grade compliance with applicable EU feed additive regulations. Packaging formats typically include IBC containers and bulk tankers for industrial volumes.
