Description

Ammonium sulfite (CAS 10196-04-0, EC 233-484-9), also known as diammonium sulfite or ammonium sulphite, is an inorganic salt available as a colorless to yellow crystalline solid or in 40% aqueous solution. It carries no assigned E-code and is not classified as a food additive under EU regulations.

In water treatment, ammonium sulfite acts as an oxygen scavenger, reacting with dissolved oxygen to prevent corrosion in boiler and cooling systems. In pulp and paper manufacturing, it functions as a reducing agent and preservation aid, inhibiting oxidative degradation of process streams. The textile and leather industries apply it to control oxidation during dyeing and tanning operations.

Ammonium sulfite is supplied in technical and industrial grades, primarily as a 40% aqueous solution or as crystalline solid. It falls under REACH registration requirements for EU supply. Packaging formats typically include IBC containers and drums for liquid grades, with bags available for solid material.
