Artemisinin

Artemisinin (CAS 63968-64-9, EC 700-290-5, formula C15H22O5) is a naturally derived endoperoxide compound extracted from the plant Artemisia annua. It is also known by the trade names Qinghaosu, Qinghosu, and Arteanuin. No E-code designation applies to this substance.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, artemisinin serves as the key precursor for semi-synthetic antimalarial derivatives such as artesunate and artemether, where its endoperoxide bridge is responsible for the active mechanism against Plasmodium parasites.
