Description

Avobenzone (CAS 70356-09-1) is an oil-soluble UVA filter used in sun care and cosmetic formulations, commercially available under trade names including Parsol 1789, Eusolex 9020, and Photoplex. It absorbs ultraviolet radiation in the 310–400 nm range, covering the full UVA spectrum.

In sunscreen and daily-wear cosmetic formulations, avobenzone absorbs UVA photons and dissipates the energy as heat, preventing skin penetration of damaging radiation. It is also incorporated into polymer coatings and plastic substrates to retard UV-induced degradation of the base material, where photostabilizers such as octocrylene are typically co-formulated to counteract its inherent photolability.

Avobenzone is supplied as a neat solid and is REACH-registered for the European market. It is permitted in EU cosmetics under Annex VI of Regulation 1223/2009 at a maximum concentration of 5%. Procurement is available in standard drum and bulk quantities; buyers should confirm photostabilizer compatibility requirements prior to formulation.
