Description

Bakuchiol (CAS 10309-37-2, EC 685-515-4, C18H24O), also known commercially as UP 256 and Drupanol, is a meroterpene phenol derived from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia. It carries no assigned E-code. The compound is classified within the Flavors and Fragrances category and is recognized by the synonyms Backuchiol and (S)-Bakuchiol.

In personal care formulations, bakuchiol functions as a retinol-alternative active by activating retinoid receptors without the photosensitivity associated with vitamin A derivatives. It also acts as a UV absorber and antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress in skin-contact products. Pharmaceutical applications leverage its skin-protectant properties in topical preparations targeting barrier repair.

Bakuchiol is supplied as a neat liquid and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU market access. Procurement teams should confirm supplier documentation including SDS, CoA, and purity specifications. Packaging formats and available grades should be confirmed directly with the supplier.
