Description
Barium Hydroxide (CAS 17194-00-2, EC 241-234-5) is an inorganic alkali supplied as Ba(OH)2, also known as baryta hydrate, barium hydrate, and caustic baryta. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified under HS code 2805191000. It dissociates fully in aqueous solution, making it a strong base with high pH-raising capacity.
In water treatment, barium hydroxide neutralises acidic effluents and precipitates sulfate ions as insoluble barium sulfate, enabling heavy metal removal. In polymer and plastics processing, it acts as a catalyst for polyurethane and epoxy curing reactions, and functions as a flame retardant additive by releasing water vapour under thermal stress to suppress combustion.
Barium Hydroxide is available in anhydrous and monohydrate grades as a white crystalline powder. It falls under REACH regulation (EU) 2006/1907/EC, and suppliers should provide a current SDS confirming purity specification. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk options depending on grade and supplier.
