Barium nitrate

Barium nitrate, also known as barium dinitrate or nitric acid barium salt, is an inorganic barium salt with the formula Ba(NO3)2. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified under Salts & Minerals. It is commercially available under its common name without significant trade name variation.

In pyrotechnics and aerospace applications, barium nitrate acts as an oxidiser, releasing oxygen at elevated temperatures to sustain combustion and produce the characteristic green flame associated with barium compounds. In metallurgy and mining, it serves as a flux and heat-treatment agent, supporting controlled oxidation during metal refining and surface treatment processes.

Barium nitrate is supplied in technical and industrial grades, typically as a white crystalline powder. It falls under REACH registration requirements within the EU, and handling is governed by its classification as an oxidising solid and acute toxin. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags or bulk quantities depending on application requirements.
