Description

Barium sulfate (BaSO4), also known as barite or baryte, is an inorganic salt occurring naturally as the mineral barite. It carries CAS number 7727-43-7 and EC number 231-784-4. It carries no E-code designation and is not classified as a food additive.

In coatings and plastics, barium sulfate functions as an inert filler and antioxidant stabilizer, improving chemical resistance and reducing degradation under UV or thermal stress. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it serves as a radiopaque contrast agent for gastrointestinal imaging, blocking X-rays due to its high atomic density. The mining sector uses it as a weighting agent in drilling fluids.

Barium sulfate is available in pharmaceutical-grade (Ph.Eur., USP), technical-grade, and surface-treated grades, with particle size distributions tailored for specific applications. It is fully registered under REACH. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk quantities, with documentation available to support procurement compliance requirements.
