Behenamidopropyl dimethylamine

Behenamidopropyl dimethylamine (CAS 60270-33-9, EC 262-134-8, formula C27H56N2O) is a long-chain fatty amidoamine derived from behenic acid. It is commercially available under trade names including Incromine BB, Tego Amid 22, Catinal BMPA, and Amidet APA 22, and is commonly abbreviated as BAPDA or referenced under the INCI designation Behenamidopropyl Dimethylamine.

In hair conditioning formulations, it functions as a precursor to a quaternary-like cationic species when protonated at low pH, adsorbing onto negatively charged hair fibers to reduce friction and improve combability. It also acts as an emulsifier in conditioning creams and rinses, stabilising oil-in-water systems, and serves as a rheology modifier by contributing to the structured network in anhydrous or low-water systems.
