Behentrimonium chloride

Behentrimonium chloride (CAS 17301-53-0, EC 241-327-0) is a quaternary ammonium compound derived from behenic acid, carrying a single long C22 alkyl chain that gives it strong cationic surface activity. It is commercially available under trade names including BTAC-228, Genamin KDM, Genamin KDMP, Quartamin AB, and FENTACARE 2231. No E-code designation applies.

In hair conditioning formulations, the cationic charge allows it to adsorb onto negatively charged, damaged hair surfaces, reducing static and improving combability through electrostatic deposition. In textile processing, it functions as a softening agent by orienting its hydrophobic tail outward on fiber surfaces, lowering friction and modifying hand feel. It also serves as an emulsifier in conditioning creams, stabilizing oil-in-water systems.
