Sodian bentonite (CAS 85049-30-5, EC 285-199-4) is a sodium-activated smectite clay traded under names including CS 50, BJ 10, DGAJE, Gelplex, and EXM 757. It is classified under Salts & Minerals and carries no assigned E-code, distinguishing it from food-grade mineral additives.

In drilling fluids, sodian bentonite swells in water to form viscous gels that suspend cuttings and seal borehole walls. In water treatment, its charged platelet structure promotes flocculation of suspended solids. Construction grout and slurry wall applications rely on its ability to reduce permeability and provide lubrication during pipe jacking and tunneling operations.
