Description
Benzoic acid (CAS 65-85-0, E210, FEMA 2131) is an organic acid occurring naturally in many fruits and resins, also known by the trade names dracylic acid and oracylic acid. It is produced industrially via toluene oxidation and serves as a primary reference compound across multiple chemical sectors.
In food and beverage manufacturing, benzoic acid functions as an antimicrobial preservative by lowering intracellular pH in yeast and bacteria, inhibiting cell metabolism at concentrations typically between 0.05–0.1%. In coatings and polymer production, it acts as a chain-terminating agent and catalyst modifier, controlling molecular weight distribution during resin synthesis.
Benzoic acid is available in food-grade (FCC, E210), pharmaceutical-grade (Ph.Eur.), and technical-grade forms. It is fully REACH-registered and compliant with EU food additive regulations. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk quantities, with documentation available to support supplier qualification and regulatory submissions.
