Description

Benzoin (CAS 119-53-9, EC 204-331-3), also known as (±)-Benzoin, Desyl alcohol, or PhCH(OH)COPh, is an aromatic alpha-hydroxy ketone derived from the condensation of benzaldehyde. It carries no assigned E-code and is commercially referenced under designations such as AURORA KA-7034.

In UV-curable coatings and printing inks, benzoin acts as a Type I photoinitiator, fragmenting under UV exposure to generate reactive radicals that initiate polymer crosslinking. In food and fragrance applications, it contributes balsamic, sweet-spice notes, while in plastics processing it functions as a heat stabilizer by scavenging degradation byproducts during compounding.

Benzoin is supplied as a light yellow powder or crystalline solid and is available in food-grade quality meeting FCC specifications. It falls under REACH regulation (EC 204-331-3) and is classified under HS code 29144090. Buyers should confirm grade suitability against application-specific standards prior to procurement.
