Benzophenone-2

Benzophenone-2 (CAS 131-55-5) is a UV-absorbing compound belonging to the hydroxybenzophenone family, commercially available under trade names including Uvinul D 50, Seesorb 106, Sumisorb 150, and T 0118. It carries no assigned E-code and is identified under EC number 205-028-9.

In polymer and coating formulations, Benzophenone-2 absorbs UV radiation in the 280-380 nm range and dissipates it as heat, protecting substrates from photodegradation. It also functions as a crosslinking agent in UV-curable systems and as a photoinitiator in printing inks, where exposure to UV light triggers polymerization reactions.

Benzophenone-2 is supplied as a solid powder and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Formulators should note its restricted status in cosmetic applications under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009.
