Benzophenone-4

Benzophenone-4 (CAS 4065-45-6) is a water-soluble UV filter used in personal care and industrial formulations, commercially available under trade names including Uvinul MS 40, Uval, and Sulisobenzone, and abbreviated as HMBS or MS 40. It carries no E-code designation and is regulated under REACH within the EU.

In sunscreen and cosmetic formulations, Benzophenone-4 absorbs UVB and short-wave UVA radiation in the 260–380 nm range, converting photon energy to heat and preventing photodegradation of active ingredients and colorants. In coatings and printing inks, it stabilizes pigments and binders against UV-induced yellowing and chain scission.

Benzophenone-4 is supplied as a white to yellowish powder compliant with REACH registration requirements, with grades available to meet cosmetic-grade specifications.
