Description

Benzophenone-5 (CAS 6628-37-1) is a water-soluble UV absorber supplied as a sodium salt, also known commercially as Sulibenzone, Uvin 1MS40, Uvistat 1121, and Cyasorb UV 284. It belongs to the benzophenone class of UV filters and carries no assigned E-code.

In personal care formulations, it absorbs UVA and UVB radiation in the 270–350 nm range, protecting aqueous-based products such as sunscreens and hair care preparations from photodegradation. In water-based coatings and printing inks, it stabilises pigments and binders by intercepting UV energy before it can initiate photochemical breakdown of the substrate.

Benzophenone-5 is available as a solid and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the European Economic Area. Procurement teams should confirm compliance with relevant cosmetic regulations, including Annex VI of EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009, which governs its permitted concentration in leave-on and rinse-off products. Standard industrial packaging formats apply.
