Benzophenone-9

Benzophenone-9 (CAS 76656-36-5), also known by the trade names Uvinul 3048 and Uvinul DS 49, is a water-soluble disodium salt UV filter belonging to the benzophenone family. It absorbs UV radiation across both UVA and UVB ranges, making it a recognised active ingredient in sun care and photoprotection formulations.

In personal care products such as sunscreens and leave-on lotions, Benzophenone-9 functions by absorbing UV photons and dissipating the energy as heat, preventing photodegradation of both the formulation and the skin. It is also used in coatings and printing inks to protect substrates and colorants from UV-induced yellowing and fading.

Benzophenone-9 is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU and is listed as a permitted UV filter in the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. Procurement teams should confirm supplier documentation includes a current Safety Data Sheet and Certificate of Analysis aligned with applicable cosmetic or industrial grade specifications.
