Description

Beta-alanine (CAS 107-95-9) is a naturally occurring amino acid and the only beta-amino acid found in humans. Also known as BETA-ALA, NSC 7603, and FEMA 3252, it is the rate-limiting precursor to carnosine synthesis in muscle tissue. It carries no assigned E-code in the EU.

In personal care formulations, beta-alanine functions as a pH buffer and humectant, stabilising product pH while attracting moisture to the skin and hair. In food and flavour applications, it acts as an acidulant and taste modifier, contributing a mild sour note at controlled concentrations. Both functions rely on its zwitterionic character across a broad pH range.

Beta-alanine is available in food-grade (FCC) and cosmetic-grade specifications as a white crystalline powder. It falls under REACH regulation (EC 203-536-5) and is classified under HS code 29224920 for EU customs purposes. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags, with pharmaceutical-grade material available on request.
