Description
Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, commonly known as DEHP, DOP, or dioctyl phthalate (CAS 117-81-7), is a phthalate ester plasticizer produced by the esterification of phthalic anhydride with 2-ethylhexanol. It carries no assigned E-code and is identified under EC number 204-211-0.
In PVC processing, DEHP intercalates between polymer chains, reducing intermolecular forces and lowering the glass transition temperature to produce flexible films, cables, and coatings. In printing inks and packaging applications, it functions as a solvent carrier for pigment dispersion, and in certain cosmetic formulations it serves as an emollient and fragrance fixative.
DEHP is subject to REACH Authorisation (Annex XIV) as an SVHC due to its reprotoxic classification, and its use in the EU requires formal authorisation for most applications. It is available as a technical-grade clear liquid, typically supplied in drums or ISO tank containers, with documentation including SDS and CoA provided on request.
