Description

Bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, commonly known as DOS and sold under trade names including PX 438, Octoil S, Staflex DOS, Bisoflex DOS, and Monoplex DOS, is a diester plasticizer derived from sebacic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. It carries CAS number 122-62-3 and EC number 204-558-8, and carries no assigned E-code.

In PVC and synthetic rubber compounding, DOS functions as a low-temperature plasticizer, maintaining flexibility at temperatures down to approximately -60°C by reducing polymer chain interactions. In personal care formulations it acts as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent, forming a non-occlusive film that reduces transepidermal water loss. It also serves as a lubricant base fluid and additive in metalworking and precision instrument applications.

DOS is available in technical and cosmetic grades, with the latter meeting REACH compliance requirements for European market supply. It is typically supplied in drums and IBC containers. Procurement teams should confirm grade suitability against relevant specifications such as FCC for food-contact applications.
