Description

Bis(hexamethylene)triamine-pentakis(methylenephosphonic acid), commonly abbreviated as BHMT and registered under CAS 35657-77-3 (EC 252-656-4), is a phosphonate-based chelating agent. It carries no assigned E-code and is not classified as a food additive. It is supplied as a buffered aqueous glycerol solution.

In water treatment, BHMT binds calcium, magnesium, and heavy metal ions through its five phosphonate groups, inhibiting scale formation and suppressing corrosion on metal surfaces at low dosage levels. In textile and paper processing, it sequesters interfering metal ions that would otherwise degrade bleaching baths or dye uniformity, improving process consistency.

BHMT is available in technical grade as a buffered aqueous glycerol solution, suitable for industrial formulation. The substance is registered under REACH and must be handled in accordance with applicable EU chemical regulations. Procurement teams should request a current Safety Data Sheet and certificate of analysis prior to ordering.
