Bis(hexamethylenetriamine)penta(methylenephosphonic acid), commonly abbreviated as BHMTPMPA and sold under trade names including Lonza 1704 and Unihib 1704, is a polyphosphonic acid chelating agent with five phosphonate groups. It carries no assigned E-code. Its molecular formula is C17H44N3O15P5.

In water treatment and oilfield systems, BHMTPMPA inhibits scale formation by binding calcium, magnesium, and iron ions through its multiple phosphonate coordination sites, preventing mineral deposition on pipework and heat exchange surfaces. In mining and metals processing, it functions as a corrosion inhibitor by adsorbing onto metal surfaces and disrupting electrochemical attack under high-hardness, high-temperature conditions.

BHMTPMPA is supplied as an aqueous solution and is subject to REACH registration requirements for import and manufacture within the EU. Procurement teams should confirm the sodium salt form, designated BHMTPHPN(Nax), where pH-adjusted grades are required for specific dosing systems.
