Description

Bixin (CAS 6983-79-5, EC 230-248-7) is a carotenoid pigment extracted from the seeds of Bixa orellana, commonly known as annatto. It is also referred to as alpha-Bixin, Bixine, Bixinol, and CIS-Bixin, and is the primary fat-soluble coloring compound responsible for the characteristic orange-red hue of annatto extracts.

In food and nutrition applications, bixin functions as a natural colorant by absorbing light in the blue-green spectrum, producing yellow-to-orange tones in fat-based matrices such as dairy, margarine, and processed foods. In personal care formulations, it is incorporated into lipsticks and skin products where its oil solubility enables uniform color dispersion in anhydrous systems.

Bixin is available in solid form and is subject to REACH registration requirements for European supply. Procurement should confirm supplier compliance with relevant food-grade specifications where applicable, as regulatory status varies by application and jurisdiction. Standard industrial packaging applies; consult supplier documentation for batch specifications.
