Brown HT

Brown HT (CAS 4553-89-3), also known by the trade designations C.I. 20285, Food Brown 3, and 1538 Brown, is a synthetic disazo colorant carrying EC number 224-924-0. It is not assigned an E-number for food use within the European Union and is classified under the Pigments and Colorants category.

In textile dyeing, Brown HT bonds to cellulosic and protein-based fibres through its disazo chromophore, delivering stable brown shades with reasonable wash fastness. In printing and packaging applications, it functions as a colorant in ink formulations where consistent hue and batch-to-batch reproducibility are required. Leather processing operations also employ it to achieve uniform surface coloration.
