Butyl methacrylate

Butyl methacrylate (BMA, CAS 97-88-1) is a reactive acrylic monomer produced by esterifying methacrylic acid with n-butanol. It is commercially available under trade names including Blemmer BMA and Acryester B, and carries no assigned E-code. It is registered under REACH and classified under HS code 29161490.

In polymer coatings and adhesives, BMA undergoes free-radical polymerization to form soft, flexible acrylic chains that improve film elongation and substrate adhesion. As a crosslinker in sealant formulations, it reacts with multifunctional co-monomers to build network density and control cure rate. At controlled purity levels, it also serves as a flavorant and fragrance component in food and personal care applications.

BMA is supplied as a stabilized liquid monomer, typically inhibited with MEHQ to prevent premature polymerization during storage and transport. Grades meeting FCC specifications are available for flavor applications. Procurement should confirm REACH compliance documentation and inhibitor concentration prior to ordering.
