Butyl parabens

Butyl paraben (CAS 94-26-8), also known by trade names Nipabutyl and Butoben, is an alkyl ester of para-hydroxybenzoic acid. It belongs to the paraben family of preservatives and is identified under EC number 202-318-7. No E-code designation applies to this substance.

In pharmaceutical and personal care formulations, butyl paraben inhibits microbial growth by disrupting cell membrane function in bacteria, yeasts, and molds, extending product shelf life at concentrations typically between 0.01% and 0.3%. It also functions as a UV absorber in topical preparations, reducing photodegradation of active ingredients, and contributes mild antioxidant activity in emulsion systems.

Butyl paraben is available in pharmaceutical grade (Ph.Eur. compliant) and cosmetic grade as a white crystalline powder. It falls under REACH regulation and is supplied in standard packaging of 25 kg fiber drums. Procurement teams should confirm current EU cosmetic regulation status prior to specification, as paraben restrictions apply to certain product categories.
