Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), also known as E321, DBPC, Popol, CAO 1, and CAO 3, is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant with CAS number 128-37-0. In food and lubricant applications, BHT inhibits oxidative chain reactions by donating hydrogen atoms to free radicals, preventing rancidity in fats and oils and extending the service life of mineral and synthetic lubricants. In plastics and rubber processing, it acts as a heat stabilizer, interrupting thermal degradation during high-temperature compounding and extrusion.
