Calcium ascorbate

Calcium ascorbate (CAS 5743-27-1) is the calcium salt of ascorbic acid, commonly known under trade names such as As-Cal, Calci-C, and Calcio-Ci. It delivers vitamin C activity in a buffered, non-acidic form, making it chemically distinct from ascorbic acid itself. No E-number is assigned under EU food additive legislation.

In food and nutritional supplement manufacturing, calcium ascorbate functions as an antioxidant by donating electrons to neutralise free radicals, extending shelf life in fat-containing systems and protecting colour in processed fruits and vegetables. In pharmaceutical tablet and capsule formulations, it serves simultaneously as an active nutrient and a processing-compatible excipient with lower acidity than ascorbic acid.
