Description
Calcium ascorbate (CAS 5743-27-1) is the calcium salt of ascorbic acid, commonly known under trade names such as As-Cal, Calci-C, and Calcio-Ci. It delivers vitamin C activity in a buffered, non-acidic form, making it chemically distinct from ascorbic acid itself. No E-number is assigned under EU food additive legislation.
In food and nutritional supplement manufacturing, calcium ascorbate functions as an antioxidant by donating electrons to neutralise free radicals, extending shelf life in fat-containing systems and protecting colour in processed fruits and vegetables. In pharmaceutical tablet and capsule formulations, it serves simultaneously as an active nutrient and a processing-compatible excipient with lower acidity than ascorbic acid.
Calcium ascorbate is available in food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications, with compliance to FCC and Ph.Eur. monographs depending on grade. It falls under REACH registration obligations for EU suppliers. Standard packaging includes 25 kg fibre drums, with bulk options available on request.
