Calcium disodium EDTA

Calcium disodium EDTA (CAS 62-33-9) is a chelating agent approved as food additive E385 in the European Union, also referred to as sodium calcium edetate or EDTA calcium disodium. It is the calcium disodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and carries EC number 200-529-9.

In food manufacturing, E385 binds free metal ions such as iron and copper that catalyse oxidative rancidity, extending shelf life in canned legumes, mayonnaise, and dressings. In personal care formulations, it sequesters hard-water minerals that would otherwise deactivate preservative systems, improving antimicrobial efficacy without increasing preservative concentration.

Calcium disodium EDTA is available in food-grade (FCC), pharmaceutical-grade (Ph.Eur.), and technical-grade specifications as a white powder.
