Description

Calcium polystyrene sulfonate (CAS 37286-92-3, EC 218-362-5), also known commercially as Sorcal and by the synonyms calcium polystyrenesulfonate and calcium polystyrenesulphonate, is a cation-exchange resin in which sulfonate groups on a polystyrene backbone selectively bind monovalent cations such as potassium in exchange for calcium ions. It carries no assigned E-code.

In pharmaceutical applications, it is used as an oral or rectal potassium-binding agent for managing hyperkalaemia, exchanging potassium ions in the gastrointestinal tract for calcium ions to reduce systemic potassium load. It is also employed in formulation development as a sequestrant where controlled cation exchange is required in solid dosage or suspension systems.

Calcium polystyrene sulfonate is supplied as a pharmaceutical-grade powder conforming to Ph.Eur. monograph specifications and subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Procurement quantities are available in sealed moisture-resistant containers; buyers should confirm grade specification and batch documentation with the supplier prior to ordering.
