Calcium pyrophosphate

Calcium Pyrophosphate (CAS 7790-76-3) is an inorganic calcium salt also known as calcium diphosphate, dicalcium diphosphate, or Ca2P2O7, and referenced under trade designations such as C 54-80 and NP 970-10. It carries no assigned E-code for direct food additive use in the EU but is recognised under EC number 232-221-5.

In pharmaceutical tablet formulations, it functions as a calcium source and buffering agent, stabilising pH to protect active ingredients from degradation. In personal care applications such as toothpaste, it acts as a mild polishing abrasive while maintaining a controlled pH environment that limits enamel erosion. Its low solubility makes it suitable where controlled ion release is required.

Calcium Pyrophosphate is available in food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade forms, with compliance to FCC and Ph.Eur. monographs depending on grade.
